The Organization of Karenni Development (OKD), which based in Malaysia seemed to welcome the residents in Burma, while there are many people want to go for oversea to get jobs and easy to caught up by the UNHCR from tortured and arrested by the Malay's police, according to the inside sources.
A local resident in Loikaw said, “The people are not forced to come to Malay, but many people apply because the travelling fees is cheaper than at other countries and easy to get the UN identity card. Another case is the drought has hit in Burma make Burmese people suffered from poverty and they target to Malay."
To Singapore, the travelling fees is up to 300,000 Kyat, while people travel to Malaysia they have to pay 150,000 Kyat lower than Singapore.
"Many people submitted its application to the foreign ministry office to work in Malaysia and some to Singapore. No more football players for a team during our Township competition, because many youth have gone," said a youth in Pruso township.
The ethnics Burmese refugee population in Malaysia increasing day by day, average raise in 30-40 that the new arrivals come and register to the community centre, said Karenni organization.
Patrick James, a chairman of OKD told to the Kantarawaddy Times, "The OKD persuade people to come to Malay by helping various people such as, new arrivals, working in remote areas and even those whom have no ID card and suffer from arrested. If someone has to pay 100 ringgits to get jobs by brokers, they (OKD) just asked the people to pay nothing." However, "Even the salary is not high as much as they found jobs by themselves, it is secured," he added.
According to the UNHCR there are 49,000 refugees and asylum seekers in Malaysia, of whom approximately 45,000 are from Burma – with the majority of the Burmese refugees reportedly Rohingya Muslims from Burma's Arakan state but also including Kachin, Arakan, Mon, Karenni, Karen and others.
In current situation, OKD has 963 Karenni people those who’s registered as a refugee and 40 people have already resettled to Third countries, mostly to USA, Canada, Newzealand and Nawway.
