Burma Army gang raped Karenni woman

A mother and her six-year-old daughter were on their way to sell snacks on the Shan-Karenni border when Burma Army soldiers arrested them.

Karenni Refugee Camp 1, about a one hour drive from Mae Hong Son City, in northwestern Thailand, is my home. I have lived there among 15,000 of my people for nearly 10 years, after being born in Camp 3, which was an hour’s walk away.

A group of young people was cutting the grass in the compound of a Baptist Church on a Saturday evening in March, in Mountain Village, Mawchi Township, Karenni (Kayah) State.

The emergency release of water in Mobye Dam has pushed the Balu Chuang River at the height of flood and around 1700 local residents from the three villages nearby Loikaw, the capital of Karenni State, are now facing the flooding problem.

According to locals, security has visibly tightened in Pruso Township since construction began on the military training ground.

One evening on a hill in Mawchi town, while some young people from the Baptist Church were busy cleaning up their church grounds and cutting the long grass, chatting and laughing together when they heard a loud explosion.

The new Burmese government has confiscated farmlands of the locals in Hpruso township awarding farmers only 50,000 Kyats compensation.

The Burmese military government has restricted the INGOs and the community based organizations from travelling freely and providing assistances to people in rural areas in Karenni(Kayah) State where there is little health care, and few development projects, according to a member of staff from the NGOs in Karenni State.

On 17 May 2011, six workers were reported dead in a landslide which happened at Lawpita (Belu Chuang) Hydropower Plant No.3 in Loikaw District of Karenni State.

An 18 years-old technological university student died after shot by the Burmese troops on his waist while driving his motorbike in Loikaw, the capital of the Karenni(Kayah) State.
